Pros: This machine does all I wanted and more. After upgrading to 2Gb of memory (667mhz) and deleting useless pre-installed software, performance has not been an issues. I have the following software installed and they work great, modest but tolerable performance reduction:
-AutoCAD 2010: weak video card is greatest limitation
-Adobe CS4 Suite: I can apply filters and manipulate 10mp RAW images without problem. The greatest shortcoming is the small screen resolution.
-Office 07: No noticeable performance reduction
-MathCAD, MATLAB, MAPLE, MATHEMATICA are all stable and surprisingly quick. Performance reduction here is much less than superpi would suggest. (The processor was supported off-the-bat)
-HD has good access, read and write.
- Contrary to previous posts, I find that wireless signal is adequate for a netbook in this price range. I have not tried to use “N” yet.
- Boots up within 30 seconds and returns from Standby in less than 3 seconds.
- It does not get hot. Fan is no
Cons: When put into context, this netbook has very few Cons in comparison to other netbook. Yes, screen is small, video card is weak, and keyboard is cramped, but this is the case for other netbooks at this price point. Actually the keyboard is much better in my opinion.
The mouse takes some getting used to. Make sure to try it out at the store before buying it.
Real world battery life is less than the 10.5 advertised (of course). I usually get 8-930 hrs of battery while browsing the internet and using office. This is more than acceptable for my needs.
Other Thoughts:
I paid 350 for this netbook.
My desktop is a very strong dual-core computer running windows 7 and I cant see a performance decrease doing everyday things on the netbook. However, I am running windows XP on the netbook because of its lower overhead. The speed of a computer is 50% dependent on the type of software you have running the hardware. If you delete the bloatware that came with the computer originally and keep things simple this little netbook will suffice 95% of all the computing needs for the average user.
